Perfion review: fit, strengths and limits for PIM buyers

Perfion is a standard PIM with built-in DAM from Aalborg, Denmark, part of Boyum IT since 2023. Perfion fits mid-sized B2B manufacturers and distributors running Microsoft Dynamics or SAP ERP. Perfion's limits are unpublished prices, a weaker fit for consumer brands and large retailers, and roadmap questions under its new owner.

Strong fit when

  • Mid-sized B2B manufacturers and distributors running Business Central or Dynamics 365 Finance
  • SAP Business One or S/4HANA customers that want a standard ERP integration
  • Companies that still produce print catalogues and price lists from product data
  • Buyers who want a choice between SaaS on Azure and an owned licence

Weak fit when

  • Consumer brands whose main need is marketplace syndication and digital shelf analytics
  • Large retailers with very high SKU volumes and many marketplace channels
  • Enterprises that need customer and supplier master data in one multidomain hub
  • Buyers who want published price points before the first vendor conversation

Ideal customer profile. A mid-sized B2B manufacturer, distributor or wholesaler in Europe or North America with a technical catalogue, a Microsoft Dynamics or SAP ERP and both print and digital output.

What Perfion is built for

Perfion is a standard PIM with built-in DAM for manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers with complex product data. Perfion was established in 2002 in Aalborg, Denmark. This profile is based on public documentation and PIMvendors selection work.

Perfion's product scope covers the PIM core, a built-in DAM, a Content Store and a Supplier Portal, all sharing one data model. A low-code Actions module handles automation, validation and approvals. Output runs to webshops, marketplaces and print catalogues from the same source. The vendor also lists a Digital Product Passport offering.

Perfion's ERP focus defines its position. The vendor names integrations for Dynamics 365 Business Central, Dynamics 365 Finance, SAP Business One and SAP S/4HANA, with the ERP holding transactional data and Perfion holding product information. The PIM and ERP integration guide explains how to split ownership between the two.

Boyum IT Solutions agreed to acquire Perfion on 28 April 2023. Boyum IT, whose majority investor is Volpi Capital, describes itself as a software partner for the upper SME segment. Perfion is now marketed as Perfion PIM by Boyum IT. In the PIM vendor directory, Perfion sits with the B2B-focused mid-market PIMs, next to Struct.

Where Perfion is strong

Perfion is strongest where a B2B company needs technical product data, ERP integration and print output from one standard product. Six strengths are documented by the vendor.

  • ERP integrations: four named ERP integrations cover the Microsoft Dynamics and SAP lines that mid-sized B2B companies run most.
  • One data model for PIM and DAM: the built-in DAM, Content Store and Supplier Portal share Perfion's data model. The vendor states this avoids synchronisation issues between modules.
  • Low-code automation: the Actions module lets teams build automations, validation and approvals without writing code.
  • Print and digital from one source: print catalogues and digital channels draw on the same product data, which still matters for wholesale and industrial buyers.
  • Deployment choice: a purchased licence for self-hosting, a private cloud option and SaaS on Microsoft Azure with 99.9%+ stated uptime.
  • Upgrade control: self-hosting customers choose when and how to upgrade to newer versions, according to the vendor.

Where Perfion is limited

Perfion's limits sit in its consumer channel depth, its pricing transparency and the questions any ownership change raises. Each needs a scenario or a written answer.

  • Consumer and marketplace depth: Perfion's centre of gravity is B2B. Consumer brands and large retailers with heavy marketplace syndication needs should test channel output in detail.
  • No published prices: the product pages reviewed show no prices. Business case work needs an early quote.
  • Ownership and roadmap: Perfion has been part of Boyum IT since 2023. Confirm roadmap commitments, support structure and partner policy in writing.
  • Enterprise scale: in PIMvendors selections, Perfion appears less often on enterprise shortlists. Large catalogues should test performance with SC-28 and SC-29.
  • Digital Product Passport scope: the vendor lists a DPP offering, but the pages reviewed do not describe it. Ask for a demonstration on governed attribute data.
  • Self-hosting responsibility: the owned-licence route puts hosting, security, backups and upgrades on the buyer's IT team. Budget that effort in the total cost of ownership.

Ideal customer profile

Perfion's ideal customer is a mid-sized B2B manufacturer or distributor with a technical catalogue and a Dynamics or SAP ERP. The table summarises the fit dimensions from the vendor record.

Dimension Best fit Weaker fit
Size Mid-market; some small business Enterprise
Business model Manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers Consumer brands, large retailers
Data complexity Medium; some high Very high with multidomain needs
Region Nordics, DACH, Benelux, UK, North America Regions without local partners
Ecosystem SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, Shopify, Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce Marketplace-led stacks

In PIMvendors selections, Perfion fits best when the ERP team and the product data team sit close together. Time to value is fast when the ERP integration is standard.

Pricing model

Perfion is sold as a purchased licence for self-hosting or as a SaaS subscription on Microsoft Azure. Prices are not published on the product pages reviewed (seen 14 October 2026). The vendor describes the SaaS option as a fixed and predictable price with less binding, and the owned licence as potentially cheapest over the long term.

Perfion's cost drivers are the deployment choice, modules such as Supplier Portal and Content Store, storage add-ons and partner effort. Self-hosting adds hardware, operations and upgrade work on the buyer's side. The PIM total cost of ownership page shows how to compare a licence with a subscription over five years.

Implementation reality

In PIMvendors selections, Perfion implementations are delivered by Perfion or its partners, often alongside the ERP partner. The ERP partner's involvement is a strength when it is planned and a delay when it is not.

As a PIMvendors estimate, a focused scope takes about 3 to 5 months and a mid-sized scope 6 to 9 months. A typical shape is ERP integration and data model first, then the webshop, then print and supplier onboarding.

Buyers underestimate print templates, which take design and testing time. They also underestimate data cleanup for technical attributes migrated from ERP item cards. Plan a named owner for each workstream.

Self-hosted projects add an infrastructure workstream: servers, backups, monitoring and an upgrade policy. Agree who owns each item before the build starts, because the vendor, the partner and internal IT can each assume another party covers it.

Scenarios to run in the demo

Four scenarios test Perfion's B2B strengths and its consumer channel and compliance limits. Pick them from the demo scenario library.

  • SC-25, create items from ERP with a clear master split: tests the Dynamics or SAP integration on your own items.
  • SC-15, deliver a BMEcat catalogue with ETIM features: tests technical B2B output for wholesalers.
  • SC-14, export a retailer or marketplace feed: tests consumer channel depth.
  • SC-18, assemble a Digital Product Passport data set: tests the DPP offering against governed attributes.

Alternatives and comparisons

Perfion is most often compared with Struct on B2B mid-market shortlists.

The distributors and wholesalers shortlist and the B2B manufacturers shortlist group further options for the same buyer profile. In PIMvendors selections, when digital channels weigh more than print, Inriver and Akeneo are the common additions to a Perfion shortlist.

Perfion is a practical choice for a B2B company whose ERP is Dynamics or SAP and whose catalogue is technical. Test marketplace output and the roadmap under Boyum as carefully as the ERP integration.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Perfion cost?

Perfion does not publish prices on the product pages reviewed. Buyers choose between a purchased licence for self-hosting and a SaaS subscription hosted on Microsoft Azure, which the vendor describes as a fixed and predictable price. Cost depends on the deployment choice, modules such as Supplier Portal and Content Store, storage add-ons and the implementation partner.

Who owns Perfion?

Boyum IT Solutions owns Perfion. Boyum IT agreed to acquire Perfion on 28 April 2023 and announced the deal on 2 May 2023. Boyum IT's majority investor is UK-based Volpi Capital, which has backed the company since 2020. Perfion is now marketed as Perfion PIM by Boyum IT.

Can Perfion run on-premise?

Yes. Perfion can be bought as a licence and self-hosted on-premise or in a private cloud, or subscribed to as SaaS on Microsoft Azure. The vendor says self-hosting suits organisations with existing hardware or capable internal IT staff. Self-hosting customers also choose when to upgrade to newer versions.

How long does a Perfion implementation take?

As a PIMvendors estimate, a focused Perfion implementation takes about 3 to 5 months and a mid-sized one 6 to 9 months. A standard ERP integration with Business Central or SAP Business One shortens the integration workstream. Print catalogue templates, supplier onboarding and data cleanup are the items that most often extend the plan.

What are the alternatives to Perfion?

Buyers who shortlist Perfion often compare it with Struct, another Danish PIM, aimed at B2B and B2C companies in the Nordics. Akeneo and Inriver appear when digital channels weigh more than print. Pimcore appears when the buyer wants a framework with in-house development. The Perfion vs Struct comparison tests the most common pairing on shared scenarios.
