Supplier onboarding: definition and role in PIM
Supplier onboarding is a product data process that collects, validates and imports product data from suppliers into the PIM in a structured way.
In PIM practice, supplier onboarding covers templates, mapping, validation, error feedback and approval of supplier data. Suppliers deliver through spreadsheets, BMEcat files, data pools, APIs or a supplier portal. The goal is to receive data in the buyer's model with as little manual rework as possible.
Illustrative example: a distributor receives product data from 300 suppliers in different formats. A standard template with ETIM features, automatic validation and rejection reports cuts the preparation time per supplier file and raises completeness.
In a selection, distributors and retailers should treat supplier onboarding as a core scenario. Buyers should test mapping of a real supplier file, validation against their rules and the feedback route to the supplier. AI attribute extraction can help with unstructured supplier documents.
