Attribute extraction: definition and role in PIM
Attribute extraction is an AI capability that reads unstructured sources, such as supplier PDFs, datasheets or descriptions, and fills structured attributes from them.
In PIM practice, attribute extraction speeds up supplier onboarding and enrichment for technical ranges. The model reads a datasheet and finds values such as dimensions, materials and ratings. It converts units and proposes values for the matching attributes, with a confidence score per value.
Illustrative example: a wholesaler receives datasheets for 800 new luminaires. Attribute extraction fills ETIM features such as luminous flux and colour temperature, and stewards review values below the confidence threshold.
In a selection, attribute extraction is one of the AI uses PIMvendors rates as useful and scalable. Buyers should test it on their own supplier documents, measure accuracy against a manually checked sample and confirm the review step. Regulatory values extracted by AI still need human approval. Extraction quality depends on document quality, so scanned or image-only PDFs need a separate test.
