AI enrichment: definition and role in PIM
AI enrichment is a PIM capability that uses machine learning or language models to draft, complete or improve product data, such as descriptions, attributes and translations.
In PIM practice, AI enrichment is useful and scalable for attribute extraction, translation, auto-classification and channel-specific descriptions. It remains unreliable for regulatory and compliance data, consistency across related attributes and end-to-end agentic workflows. Governance decides where AI output needs human approval.
Illustrative example: a retailer uses AI to draft marketplace descriptions from PIM attributes in four languages. Stewards review a sample per batch, and any text mentioning safety or certifications goes to the compliance owner.
In a selection, buyers should test AI features on their own data with visible confidence scores, review steps and audit trails. Pricing for AI usage, data handling and model choice also belong in the evaluation. AI works best at maturity level 3 and above, where validation rules and workflows exist.
