Enrichment: definition and role in PIM
Enrichment is a product data process that adds the attributes, descriptions, translations, classifications, relationships and assets a product needs before publication.
In PIM practice, enrichment starts when a base item arrives from ERP or a supplier. It ends when the product passes the completeness rules for its channels. Enrichment is usually split into tasks per attribute group, assigned to the people who own or know that data, such as engineers, marketers and translators.
Illustrative example: a new garden hose arrives from ERP with an item number, weight and price. Product management adds technical attributes, marketing writes the description, a translator adds three languages, and the image team links packshots. The workflow tracks each task.
In a selection, enrichment speed and convenience matter for daily users. Buyers should test bulk editing, task assignment, side-by-side translation screens and the effort to enrich 50 new products. AI enrichment can speed up drafting, with human review for facts and compliance values.
