Attribute group: definition and role in PIM

Attribute group is a data model element that bundles related attributes, such as logistics, technical or marketing attributes, for display, permissions and ownership.

In PIM practice, attribute groups organise the product screen and the governance model. A group such as Logistics might hold weight, dimensions and packaging levels, while Marketing holds titles, descriptions and selling points. Permissions, workflow tasks and data owners are often assigned per attribute group.

Illustrative example: a manufacturer gives compliance attributes their own group with the compliance manager as data owner. Marketers can read those values but cannot edit them, and every change triggers an approval task.

In a selection, attribute groups are the practical unit for the attribute ownership map. Buyers should check whether permissions and workflows can be set per group and per locale. A PIM that only supports permissions per product or per user role makes governance by attribute group difficult to enforce.
