Data owner: definition and role in PIM

Data owner is a governance role that is accountable for the meaning, rules and quality of a defined group of product data, usually an attribute group.

In PIM practice, data owners are business managers who answer for the consequences of wrong data. A compliance manager owns regulatory attributes, a product manager owns technical attributes and a marketing lead owns texts and images. Owners approve definitions, rules and changes, and accept quality targets.

Illustrative example: the compliance manager of a toy manufacturer owns all GPSR-related attributes, such as warnings and manufacturer contact details. Any change to those attributes routes to her for approval before publication.

In a selection, every attribute group needs one named owner with time allocated. Buyers should check that the PIM supports permissions and approval workflows per attribute group, so ownership can be enforced. The attribute ownership map produced before selection becomes a direct input for configuration.
