Data steward: definition and role in PIM

Data steward is a governance role that maintains product data day to day, resolves validation errors, monitors quality metrics and supports data owners.

In PIM practice, data stewards usually sit in the product data team. They import supplier files, fix rejected values, chase missing attributes, manage enrichment queues and report completeness and quality per product line. Stewards execute the rules that data owners set.

Illustrative example: a distributor's data steward receives a supplier file with 400 new products. The steward maps the columns, runs validation, sends the rejected rows back to the supplier and assigns enrichment tasks for the accepted products.

In a selection, stewards should help write requirements and score demos, because they will use the PIM most. PIMvendors estimate: a lead steward needs 0.5 to 1 FTE per 10,000 actively enriched SKUs, varying with automation and range complexity. A selection without allocated steward time tends to produce a PIM that nobody maintains.
