BMEcat: definition and role in PIM

BMEcat is an XML-based exchange format that transfers electronic product catalogues, including product data, prices and classifications, between suppliers and buyers.

In PIM practice, BMEcat is a common format for B2B catalogue exchange in German-speaking markets, especially in procurement, wholesale and e-procurement platforms. A BMEcat file can carry product descriptions, features structured by a classification such as ETIM or ECLASS, prices and media references.

Illustrative example: a supplier of technical components exports its range as a BMEcat file with ETIM features for a wholesaler's procurement platform. The wholesaler imports the file without manual mapping because both sides use the same format and classification.

In a selection, BMEcat matters for manufacturers and distributors selling to industrial or wholesale customers in DACH. Buyers should test both export and import, since supplier onboarding often starts from BMEcat files. Version support, classification mapping and validation of the output deserve explicit scenarios.
