Syndication: definition and role in PIM
Syndication is a data distribution process that sends product data from the source system to external recipients in the format each recipient requires.
In PIM practice, syndication covers webshops, marketplaces, retailers, distributors, comparison sites, print and GS1 data pools. Each recipient has its own attribute list, category tree, value lists and delivery method. Syndication can run from the PIM's own connectors, a feed management tool, a syndication network or a data pool.
Illustrative example: a tool manufacturer publishes the same drill to its own webshop, three retailer portals, a marketplace and a GDSN data pool. Each export uses different attribute names, title lengths and image rules, all generated from one governed record.
In a selection, syndication separates PIM products more often than the user interface does. Buyers should test their most important channels on their own sample products, including error handling when a recipient rejects data. A connector that exists on a slide has to work for the buyer's specific channels and formats.
