Product feed: definition and role in PIM

Product feed is a structured file or API stream that delivers product data to a channel in that channel's required format and schedule.

In PIM practice, product feeds connect the governed record to marketplaces, comparison sites, ad platforms and retailers. A feed maps internal attributes to channel fields, filters which products go where and runs on a schedule or on change. Feeds can come from the PIM, a feed management tool or the commerce platform.

Illustrative example: Google Merchant Center requires id, title, description, link, image link, availability and price for every product, with titles up to 150 characters. A retailer's feed maps PIM attributes to those fields and filters out products without images.

In a selection, buyers should list the feeds they run today and who maintains them. When teams fix product facts inside feed rules, the feed becomes a second master. Buyers should test the full chain from PIM record to live listing, including error reports from the channel.
