Marketplace: definition and role in PIM
Marketplace is an online sales platform that lets third-party sellers list and sell products under the platform's rules for data, content and fulfilment.
In PIM practice, each marketplace has its own category tree, required attributes per category, title and image rules, variant model and error reporting. Marketplaces also act as online channels under regulations such as GPSR, which requires specific product information on online offers.
Illustrative example: a home goods brand expands to two European marketplaces. Each requires different attributes for the same product category, and listings without a valid GTIN or required safety information get rejected.
In a selection, buyers should list target marketplaces and test the export to each, including category mapping, variant handling and error feedback. The choice between PIM connectors and a feed management tool depends largely on the number of marketplaces and how often their rules change. Current marketplace rejection reports make a useful baseline for the business case.
