Channel: definition and role in PIM
Channel is a destination that receives and displays product data, such as a webshop, marketplace, retailer portal, print catalogue, app or data pool.
In PIM practice, each channel has its own requirements: attribute list, category tree, title length, image rules, languages and delivery format. PIM systems model channels explicitly, with channel-specific completeness rules, attribute values and asset selections.
Illustrative example: a brand publishes one product to three channels. Its webshop gets a 70-character title, a marketplace a 150-character title and the print catalogue a short technical text. The PIM holds all three values and sends each to its channel.
In a selection, buyers should list every current and planned channel, with its format and volume. The number and type of channels drive connector requirements, licensing in some pricing models and the choice between PIM connectors and a feed management tool. Each important channel deserves a demo scenario.
