Data pool: definition and role in PIM
Data pool is a product data exchange service that stores and distributes standardised product data between suppliers and recipients, often as part of GS1 GDSN.
In PIM practice, a data pool sits between the supplier's PIM and the recipient's systems. In GDSN, suppliers and recipients must join a GS1-certified data pool to exchange product data on the network. Some industries also run national or sector data pools outside GDSN.
Illustrative example: a health and beauty brand publishes products to its certified data pool. A drugstore chain subscribed through another certified data pool receives new items and updates automatically, with validation feedback flowing back to the brand.
In a selection, buyers should list the data pools their customers require and test the PIM's route to each. Points to test include packaging hierarchies, validation errors and publication status. The data pool subscription usually comes on top of the PIM licence, so it belongs in the cost comparison.
