Best PIM for distributors and wholesalers: a criteria-based shortlist
No single PIM is best for every distributor or wholesaler. Fit depends on supplier onboarding volume, classification standards, catalogue size and the ERP that owns prices and stock. Akeneo, Bluestone PIM, Perfion, Pimberly, Stibo Systems and Struct have documented profiles that match distributor criteria and belong on the longlist for the evidence check before scenario demos.
The shortlist, alphabetical
Open the Fit Finder with this segmentWhich PIM is best for distributors and wholesalers?
No single PIM is best for every distributor or wholesaler. Fit depends on supplier onboarding volume, the classification standards customers expect, catalogue size, and the ERP that owns prices and stock. This page names the criteria that decide fit for distributors and the vendors whose documented profile matches them.
The vendors below are listed alphabetically. No vendor paid for inclusion, and the vendor records carry no sponsorship field, as set out in the neutrality policy. Treat the list as a starting point for scenario demos, drawn from the PIM vendor directory.
Distributors that also brand their own ranges should compare this list with the B2B manufacturer shortlist. Mid-sized wholesalers should also read the mid-market shortlist.
What distributors and wholesalers need from a PIM
Distributors need a PIM that turns many inconsistent supplier files into one classified, sellable catalogue. In PIMvendors selections, six criteria decide fit:
- Supplier onboarding at volume: saved import mappings, a supplier portal with validation, and rejection reports per row. The supplier onboarding guide covers the patterns.
- Classification and normalisation: ETIM, ECLASS or UNSPSC classes, unit conversion and value lists applied during import.
- Catalogue scale: search, filtering and bulk edits that stay fast at hundreds of thousands of SKUs.
- ERP master split: the ERP keeps prices, stock and item numbers, and the PIM owns enrichment and media.
- Customer outputs: webshop feeds, BMEcat catalogues for trade customers, print catalogues and customer-specific assortments.
- AI extraction from datasheets: values pulled from supplier PDFs, with a link to the source passage and a confidence threshold.
Cost scales with SKU count at many vendors. Price the catalogue you expect in three years, including supplier portal and connector add-ons. In PIMvendors selections, distributors often underestimate the supplier side: each supplier needs onboarding, training and follow-up, whichever tool is chosen.
Vendors whose profile matches
Six vendors match the distributor criteria on their documented profile. Each entry states why the vendor is here, one limitation, and one scenario to run.
Akeneo
Why it is on this list
Akeneo offers Supplier Data Manager as an add-on in all 3 packages and scores 2 of 2 for AI enrichment in its editorial fit record. Its connector catalogue is large, and SaaS keeps the operating burden low. Akeneo scores 1 for distributors, and very deep B2B technical models sit outside its core scope.
Check in the demo
Run SC-20, extract attributes from supplier datasheets. Each extracted value must link to its source passage in the buyer's own PDFs.
Bluestone PIM
Why it is on this list
Bluestone PIM describes itself as a headless product data platform for retailers, manufacturers and distributors. It exposes 700+ task-level APIs, and a supplier portal is available through the Extension Hub. Bluestone PIM delivers SAP, Oracle and Dynamics integration as a tailored Connectivity Suite project, and it publishes no prices.
Check in the demo
Run SC-25, create items from ERP with a clear master split. ERP updates must never overwrite PIM-mastered enrichment.
Perfion
Why it is on this list
Perfion scores 2 of 2 for distributors and for B2B technical data. Perfion names integrations with Dynamics 365 Business Central, Dynamics 365 Finance, SAP Business One and SAP S/4HANA. Built-in DAM, a Supplier Portal and print output share one data model. Perfion's enterprise fit score is 0, which matters for very large catalogues.
Check in the demo
Run SC-15, deliver a BMEcat catalogue with ETIM features. ETIM features must export with the correct units and value codes.
Pimberly
Why it is on this list
Pimberly scores 2 of 2 for distributors and includes DAM in all 4 plans. It offers customer and vendor portals and lists Sage, Dynamics 365, SAP, Epicor and other ERPs among its integrations. Pimberly's entry plan is USD 36,000 per year, and continental European presence is limited.
Check in the demo
Run SC-02, supplier self-service onboarding with validation. Suppliers must be unable to submit records that fail mandatory rules.
Stibo Systems
Why it is on this list
Stibo Systems scores 2 of 2 for distributors, B2B technical data and multidomain MDM. STEP governs supplier and location data next to product data, which suits distributors with large supplier bases. Stibo Systems sizes STEP for enterprise programmes, so mid-sized wholesalers will find it heavy.
Check in the demo
Run SC-29, search and filter a catalogue of 500,000 SKUs. Combined filters must return in under 5 seconds.
Struct
Why it is on this list
Struct scores 2 of 2 for distributors and publishes its prices. The price list includes a Supplier Onboarding Portal at EUR 350 per month and an ETIM Connector App at EUR 230 per month. Struct's presence outside the Nordics is limited, so check partner coverage in your country.
Check in the demo
Run SC-01, onboard 5,000 supplier SKUs and classify to ETIM. The saved mapping must rerun on a second file without rework.
How do the shortlisted vendors compare?
The shortlisted vendors differ most in how they price supplier onboarding and how they connect to ERP. The table summarises documented facts only. Pimberly and Struct publish entry-plan prices, while the other four quote some or all tiers per customer. Ask every vendor for a quote at your three-year SKU count.
| Vendor | Deployment | Focus | Documented segment evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Akeneo | SaaS, open source self-hosted | PIM for brands and manufacturers | Supplier Data Manager add-on in all 3 packages |
| Bluestone PIM | SaaS | Headless, API-first PIM | Supplier portal via Extension Hub, tailored ERP integration |
| Perfion | SaaS, on-premise, private cloud | Standard PIM with DAM for B2B | Supplier Portal on the same data model, Dynamics and SAP ERP |
| Pimberly | SaaS | PIM with embedded DAM | Customer and vendor portals, DAM in all 4 plans |
| Stibo Systems | SaaS, on-premise | Multidomain MDM | Supplier and location domains alongside product |
| Struct | SaaS | Nordic B2B and B2C PIM | Supplier Onboarding Portal EUR 350 per month, ETIM connector |
Vendors that did not make this list, and why
The remaining profiled vendors match fewer of the six criteria on their documented profile. Each can still fit a specific distributor.
- Censhare, Quable, Salsify and SyncForce score 0 for distributors, and Plytix targets low data complexity.
- Centric PXM and Syndigo centre on brand-to-retailer content and syndication.
- Informatica fits distributors inside an enterprise multidomain MDM programme and appears on the enterprise shortlist.
- Inriver, Pimcore and Viamedici score 1 for distributors. Their documented strengths sit with manufacturers and brands.
- Sales Layer scores 1 for distributors, and its published plans stop at 200,000 SKUs before custom terms.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best PIM for a distributor or wholesaler?
No PIM is best for every distributor or wholesaler. The right PIM depends on how many suppliers deliver data, which classification standards customers expect, how large the catalogue is and which ERP owns prices and stock. Akeneo, Bluestone PIM, Perfion, Pimberly, Stibo Systems and Struct match the segment profile. Scenario demos on real supplier files decide between them.
Does a distributor need a supplier portal in its PIM?
A distributor with dozens or hundreds of suppliers benefits from a supplier portal, because suppliers then correct their own data against validation rules. The portal must write approved records into the main catalogue without manual re-keying. A distributor with a handful of suppliers can rely on saved import mappings instead, which cost less and need less supplier management.
How large a catalogue can a PIM handle for a wholesaler?
Catalogue capacity varies widely between PIM vendors and between pricing tiers. Some SaaS PIMs publish SKU limits per plan, while enterprise platforms are sized per contract. A wholesaler should test search, filtering and bulk edits on a catalogue of realistic size, for example 500,000 SKUs, and treat performance figures from slides as unproven.
Should prices and stock live in the PIM or the ERP?
Prices and stock should stay in the ERP for most distributors, because the ERP runs ordering, invoicing and logistics. The PIM receives item numbers and basic data from the ERP and owns enrichment, classification and media. The integration must respect that master split per attribute, so ERP updates never overwrite enriched content.
Which classification standard should a wholesaler support?
The classification standard depends on the sector. Electrical, installation and building wholesalers in the Benelux and DACH usually need ETIM, often delivered in BMEcat. Industrial and procurement-driven customers may ask for ECLASS or UNSPSC. Ask your largest customers which standard and version they require before writing the PIM requirements.
