MDM: definition and role in PIM
MDM is a data management discipline and software category that creates one trusted record for shared business entities such as customers, suppliers, locations and products.
In PIM practice, MDM and PIM meet on the product domain. MDM focuses on identity: matching, merging and deduplicating records from several source systems, and distributing a golden record to ERP, CRM and finance. PIM focuses on content: enriching the product record and publishing it per channel and locale.
Illustrative example: a group with three ERP instances after acquisitions holds the same bearing under three item numbers. An MDM matches the three records into one identity. The PIM then enriches that identity with attributes, translations and images for the webshop and distributors.
In a selection, the MDM question decides architecture. Buyers need to know which system issues the product identifier and which system owns each attribute group. A multidomain MDM that claims PIM capability should run the same product scenarios as a dedicated PIM.
