PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

Golden record: definition and role in PIM

Golden record is a single, trusted version of a business entity that results from matching, merging and validating data from several sources.

In PIM practice, the golden record concept comes from MDM. In a PIM context, it usually means the approved product record that every channel and downstream system reads. In MDM, it means the merged identity record created from several source systems with survivorship rules.

Illustrative example: a group receives the same product from two ERPs with different descriptions and weights. Survivorship rules take the weight from the logistics ERP and the description from the brand ERP. The result is one golden record, which the PIM then enriches.

In a selection, buyers should clarify which system produces the golden record for products. If several ERPs or suppliers create overlapping records, matching and survivorship logic becomes a requirement. If one ERP creates all items, the PIM's approved record can serve as the golden record without MDM.
