PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

Single source of truth: definition and role in PIM

Single source of truth is a data architecture principle that assigns each data element to one authoritative system from which all other systems read.

In PIM practice, the principle usually means that the PIM holds the authoritative version of product content. ERP holds transactional data, and a DAM holds files. Single source of truth applies per attribute group: several systems can each be the source for different data.

Illustrative example: a brand corrects a product dimension once in the PIM. The webshop, marketplace feeds, print catalogue and data pool receive the corrected value, and nobody edits copies elsewhere.

In a selection, the principle becomes concrete through the attribute ownership map. Buyers should name the source system for each attribute group and test that the PIM can be that source for its share. Corrections made in feed tools or webshops break the principle and create second masters. Measuring consistency across channels shows where the principle fails in practice.
