Headless: definition and role in PIM
Headless is an architecture pattern that separates the presentation layer from the back-end system, so content and data are delivered through APIs to any front end.
In PIM practice, headless means the PIM or commerce platform serves product data through APIs. Separate front ends such as websites, apps and kiosks render it. The PIM becomes a content source for several presentation layers instead of feeding one storefront.
Illustrative example: a brand runs a website, a mobile app and an in-store screen from one headless commerce back end. All three read product content from the PIM API, so a corrected description appears everywhere after one publication.
In a selection, headless architectures raise the bar for the PIM API. Buyers should test API performance, event notifications, delta queries and caching behaviour. Headless also shifts work to front-end teams, so the total cost of ownership should include their effort. Preview of unpublished content in the front end is a further point to test.
