API: definition and role in PIM

API is a software interface that lets other systems read and write data in a PIM programmatically, under defined access rules and rate limits.

In PIM practice, the API is the main route for integrations with ERP, DAM, commerce platforms, feed tools and custom applications. Most modern PIM products offer REST APIs and some offer GraphQL. API coverage, rate limits, bulk endpoints and event notifications determine how well integrations perform.

Illustrative example: a headless commerce site reads product data from the PIM API whenever a product is published. A webhook notifies the site of each change, so the site updates within minutes instead of waiting for a nightly export.

In a selection, buyers should test the API on their own integration scenarios. Points to check include coverage of all objects, bulk performance, rate limits per licence tier, versioning policy and documentation quality. API limits sometimes appear only in contract terms, so the commercial review should include them.
