iPaaS: definition and role in PIM

iPaaS is a cloud integration platform that connects applications through prebuilt connectors, mappings, workflows and monitoring.

In PIM practice, an iPaaS often sits between the PIM, ERP, DAM and commerce platforms. It handles mapping, scheduling, error handling and retries, so that integrations do not depend on custom scripts in each system. Some PIM vendors include integration tooling, and others rely on the customer's iPaaS.

Illustrative example: a distributor runs its ERP to PIM integration through its existing iPaaS. New items, status changes and price lists flow every 15 minutes, and failed messages land in a monitoring queue that IT reviews daily.

In a selection, buyers should state whether an iPaaS already exists and test PIM connectors for it. Integration typically accounts for a large share of implementation effort, so the integration approach belongs in requirements and in the total cost of ownership calculation.
