PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

ERP: definition and role in PIM

ERP is a business system category that runs transactional processes such as purchasing, production, inventory, sales orders and finance, including the transactional item master.

In PIM practice, ERP usually creates the item number and holds cost, price, stock, units of measure and logistics data. The PIM receives the base item from ERP and adds the content that sells it. That content covers attributes per product family, marketing texts, translations, classifications, relationships and asset links. Live stock and customer prices typically flow from ERP directly to commerce platforms.

Illustrative example: a distributor creates a new pump in ERP with an item number, cost price and weight. The PIM picks up the item overnight, assigns enrichment tasks, and publishes the completed product to the webshop and two marketplaces.

In a selection, the ERP integration is one of the largest implementation work packages. Buyers should map which attribute groups ERP creates, which the PIM creates, and the integration direction for each. Connector depth for the specific ERP platform deserves a scenario of its own.
