PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

Akeneo vs Salsify: which PIM fits your situation

Akeneo and Salsify are SaaS platforms for brands with different centres of gravity. Akeneo is a PIM-centred platform for brands and manufacturers with an Activation module and an app store. Salsify PXM centres on syndication to retailers through its PXM Network and a GS1-certified GDSN data pool. The deciding factor is how much of your revenue depends on retailer syndication.

Choose Akeneo when

  • You are a manufacturer or brand whose main channels are your own webshop and distributors.
  • You want a listed entry price and an open source edition to prototype your model.
  • You want a DAM with CDN documented inside the PIM package you buy.

Choose Salsify when

  • Most revenue runs through large retailers whose attribute requirements change often.
  • You must publish to GS1 GDSN and want the data pool from the same vendor.
  • You want retailer requirement validation and digital shelf analytics in one platform.

The core difference

Akeneo puts the PIM at the centre and adds channels as modules, while Salsify puts retailer syndication at the centre and builds the PXM around it. PIMvendors has hands-on consulting experience with both. The PIM vendor directory lists both as SaaS platforms for brands.

Akeneo bundles a DAM with CDN, AI description generation and one Activation channel in every package. Its App Store lists 69 connector apps, and a free Community Edition remains open source under OSL 3.0. Supplier onboarding comes through the Supplier Data Manager add-on.

Salsify runs the PXM Network, which validates content against each endpoint's attribute requirements before delivery. It operates a GS1-certified GDSN data pool, Digital Shelf Analytics and Supplier Experience Management for retailers. Salsify agreed in July 2026 to be acquired by Cinven.

In PIMvendors selections, the split usually follows the channel mix. Brands that sell through many large retailers weigh syndication depth first, and manufacturers with their own webshops and distributors weigh the PIM first.

Scenario by scenario

Five scenarios from the demo scenario library test where a PIM-centred platform and a syndication-centred platform behave differently. Run them with PIMvendors' scenario-based demo method on your own products.

SC-13: Publish products to GS1 GDSN

Provide 50 products with GTINs, packaging hierarchy and net content, plus a target recipient. Salsify should show publication through its own data pool and the response loop. Ask Akeneo to show its route to a data pool, since GDSN is not documented on its package pages. A file export for manual upload fails this scenario.

SC-14: Export a retailer or marketplace feed

Provide 500 products and the current template of one retailer you sell through. Salsify validates content against endpoint requirements and states that it updates them automatically. Akeneo includes one Activation channel per package. Ask both who changes the mapping when the retailer changes its template.

SC-07: Measure completeness per channel and market

Provide 200 products and mandatory lists for a webshop, a marketplace and a printed catalogue in two markets. Watch whether completeness is scored per channel and market or as one global figure.

SC-15: Deliver a BMEcat catalogue with ETIM features

Manufacturers selling through wholesalers should run this scenario on 1,000 ETIM-classified products. Neither vendor documents BMEcat on the pages checked, so ask both to show the export live. A third-party converter outside the PIM fails this scenario.

SC-19: Generate channel descriptions with AI and approval

Provide 50 products, a tone guide and two channel length rules. Compare Salsify's Angie agent with Akeneo's AI description generation, and check that both write into a draft that needs approval.

Pricing model contrast

Akeneo publishes an entry price and quotes its upper packages, while Salsify publishes no pricing model at all. Both build the final price from modules, so scope drives the comparison.

Akeneo lists Growth from USD 0 per year, with Advanced and Premium on quote. The Supplier Data Manager, commerce apps and some AI features are add-ons, and each package includes one Activation channel. The Akeneo pricing page tracks package contents.

Salsify does not publish its pricing model. Expect the quote to reflect the retailers you syndicate to and the modules you add, such as GDSN, analytics and supplier onboarding. The Salsify pricing page tracks what is known.

Cost driver Akeneo Salsify
Public list prices Growth entry price only None
Channel cost One Activation channel per package; more on quote Not publicly documented
Ownership risk to price None verified Pending Cinven acquisition

With a change of owner pending, negotiate renewal caps and a change-of-control clause with Salsify. The licence negotiation guide covers both points.

Migrating between Akeneo and Salsify

Migration between Akeneo and Salsify is shaped by channel mappings more than by core attributes. Product attributes transfer through APIs, and retailer mappings need rebuilding.

Map these elements first:

  1. Attributes, value lists and localised values.
  2. Variant structures, confirmed live on both sides before mapping.
  3. Retailer and marketplace mappings, which are platform-specific.
  4. GDSN publications, which need a data pool registration change if you leave Salsify's pool.
  5. Assets with metadata and links to products.

On the contract side, secure data export rights, a documented export of channel mappings and an overlap period while retailers are reconnected. The data migration guide covers the full sequence.

How to decide

Choose between Akeneo and Salsify on channel mix, GDSN obligations and appetite for ownership risk. Neither platform is better overall.

  • Channel mix: many large retailers with changing templates favour a closer look at Salsify, while own webshops and distributors favour Akeneo.
  • GDSN: a mandatory data pool favours testing Salsify's own pool against Akeneo's route in SC-13.
  • Business model: manufacturers with technical B2B data should run SC-15 on both.
  • Ownership: the pending Cinven deal calls for stronger contract protection with Salsify.

Put three items in writing before the final round. From Akeneo, get the route to a GDSN data pool and the price of each extra Activation channel. From Salsify, get renewal caps, roadmap commitments and change-of-control terms while the Cinven deal closes. From both, get the export format for channel mappings and assets if you leave. Then speak to customers of each platform through PIM reference checks, including at least one reference with a channel mix like yours.

Read the Akeneo profile and Salsify profile, then check fit in the PIM Fit Finder. Build the demo script from the demo scenario library.

Count the retailers that dictate your attribute templates before you look at either demo. That number tells you whether syndication is a module or the centre of your PIM.

Frequently asked questions

Is Salsify or Akeneo better for consumer brands?

Neither Salsify nor Akeneo is better for every consumer brand. Salsify centres on syndication to retailers through its PXM Network and a GS1-certified GDSN data pool. Akeneo centres on the PIM, with an Activation module for channel feeds. Brands that sell mostly through large retailers should test both with scenarios SC-13 and SC-14 on their own products.

Does Akeneo support GDSN like Salsify?

Salsify operates its own GS1-certified GDSN data pool. GDSN support was not publicly documented on the Akeneo package and App Store pages checked on 14 October 2026. Buyers who must publish to GDSN should ask Akeneo how it reaches a data pool and run scenario SC-13, including the confirmation messages returned by the recipient.

Does the Cinven acquisition change how to evaluate Salsify?

Salsify agreed in July 2026 to be acquired by Cinven, and closing was not confirmed as of 14 October 2026. A change of owner can affect pricing, roadmap and support. Ask for price caps on renewals, a written roadmap for the modules you buy, and a change-of-control clause before signing a multi-year Salsify contract.

How do Akeneo and Salsify price their platforms?

Akeneo lists its Growth package from USD 0 per year and prices Advanced and Premium on quote, with add-on modules. Salsify does not publish a pricing model. Expect the cost of both to depend on modules such as syndication channels, supplier onboarding and analytics, so request three-year quotes that cover the same retailers and SKU volume.

Can we use Akeneo for PIM and Salsify for syndication?

Some brands run a PIM for mastering and a separate syndication platform for retailers, and the Salsify technology partner directory lists integrations. This adds a second licence and an integration to maintain. Decide where each attribute is mastered, and test the flow with scenario SC-26 before choosing a two-platform design over one platform.
