How long does a PIM selection take?

A PIM selection takes about 12 weeks with the PIMvendors method, measured from mobilisation to a board-ready decision. The first four weeks define the requirements and data model, and the remaining weeks test every vendor on those same requirements and scenarios.

The 12-week plan in the PIMvendors method:

1. Weeks 1 to 4: mobilise, baseline, validated requirements and the target data model.
2. Week 5: longlist to a shortlist of 3 to 5 vendors.
3. Weeks 6 to 7: RFP and scenario script built on the buyer's sample data.
4. Weeks 8 to 9: scenario-based demos on the buyer's own sample data.
5. Weeks 10 to 12: reference checks and a proof of concept with the top 2 vendors, negotiation and the final recommendation.

Weeks 3 and 4 hold the core data model work. A business case and stakeholder alignment that do not exist yet add preparation time before week 1. PIMvendors estimate: 4 to 8 weeks of preparation for a mid-sized company starting from spreadsheets.

Three things slow selections most: requirements written during demos, missing decision makers at scenario sessions, and procurement steps added late. Plan the steering committee dates in week 1, and the 12 weeks hold.
