PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

What is a scenario-based PIM demo?

A scenario-based PIM demo is a vendor demonstration of your real use cases on your own sample data, following a script you wrote. Every shortlisted vendor shows the same scenarios, so the buying team scores like for like. Generic vendor demos predict little about how a PIM will work in your organisation.

A scenario-based demo replaces the vendor's standard presentation with your own use cases, played on your own sample data. PIMvendors uses this method in its selections, because generic demos predict nothing about fit.

Each scenario has 4 parts:

  • The use case, written from the user's view, for example "a product manager launches 50 new variants in 3 languages for 2 channels".
  • The sample data, sent to every vendor in advance.
  • The expected result and the steps the team wants to see.
  • The scoring criteria, linked to the requirements behind the scenario.

PIMvendors estimate: a demo covers 8 to 12 scenarios across the 4 requirement domains in half a day, about four hours, per vendor, with the same people present for every vendor.

Scenarios expose what slides hide: how much configuration was needed, how bulk changes behave, how workflows handle exceptions, and how data leaves the PIM. Ask vendors to state which parts were configured for the demo and which ran out of the box.

Scenarios come from validated requirements, so they work only after the data model and requirements exist. That order is the core of the PIMvendors method.
