Do I need a PIM if I already have an ERP?
Most companies with an ERP still need a PIM once they sell through more than one channel or language. The ERP masters transactional data such as price, stock and orders. A PIM masters the descriptive data that customers read: attributes, classifications, translations, assets and channel-specific content.
A company with an ERP needs a PIM when descriptive product data outgrows the ERP item master. The ERP is built for transactions: item numbers, prices, stock, units and orders. It is rarely built for hundreds of attributes per product class, enrichment workflows, many languages or channel-specific versions of the same product.
Three signals show that the ERP has reached its limit:
- Product content lives in spreadsheets next to the ERP, maintained by marketing or e-commerce.
- Each webshop, marketplace or distributor needs its own export, built by hand.
- Regulation such as PPWR, which applies generally from 12 August 2026, adds compliance attributes the ERP has no place for.
In PIMvendors selections, the ERP stays the master for the commercial core and feeds the PIM with item number, status and logistics data. The PIM then owns enrichment and syndication. Defining that split per attribute is the first step of the PIMvendors method, because most selections fail when buyers compare software before they have defined their data model.
A small catalogue sold through one channel in one language can often stay in the ERP. The decision rests on the number of channels, languages and attributes, measured before any vendor conversation.
