What is the difference between PIM and MDM?

PIM and MDM differ in scope and in audience. MDM governs the core identity of several data domains, such as customer, supplier, location and product, so that every system uses the same record. PIM focuses on one domain, product, and goes much deeper into descriptive content for customers and channels.

The practical differences sit in four areas:

• Data scope: MDM holds a lean golden record, while PIM holds hundreds of attributes, translations, assets and relations per product.
• Users: MDM serves data stewards and IT, while PIM serves product managers, marketing and e-commerce teams.
• Processes: MDM focuses on matching, merging and governance, while PIM focuses on enrichment workflows and channel output.
• Output: MDM feeds internal systems, while PIM feeds webshops, marketplaces, retailers, print and data pools.

Several platforms cover both, and some product MDM suites include strong PIM features.
