PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

Product data standards for PIM selection: the 2026 overview

Product data standards fix half the PIM data model before selection starts. ETIM and ECLASS define classes and features for technical products, GS1 GDSN and GS1 Digital Link carry GTIN-based data to retailers and consumers, BMEcat carries catalogues, UNSPSC classifies procurement spend and schema.org Product describes products on the web. Each standard sets concrete PIM requirements.

Which product data standards does a PIM need to support?

A PIM needs to support the standards your customers and channels already require. Industry standards fix half the data model before selection starts. A building materials supplier that ignores ETIM, or a food brand that ignores GS1 GDSN, will shortlist vendors on criteria that miss the decisive requirement.

The seven standards on this hub fall into four groups:

  • Feature-based classifications that define classes, features, values and units: ETIM and ECLASS.
  • GTIN-based standards for retail and consumer access: GS1 GDSN and GS1 Digital Link.
  • Exchange formats that carry catalogues between companies: BMEcat.
  • Code lists for procurement and the web: UNSPSC and schema.org Product.

Each group sets a different PIM requirement. Classifications shape the attribute model. GTIN standards shape the item and packaging model. Exchange formats shape export, change tracking and validation. Code lists shape mappings and channel output. The PIM by industry pillar shows which standards each sector needs, and the data model design page shows how to build them into the model before vendors are invited.

Product data standards compared

The table below lists each standard with its current version as verified on 14 October 2026. Versions marked "confirm" could not be verified on the governing body's site for this edition.

Standard Governing body Scope Typical industries Current version (October 2026) What a PIM must support
ETIM ETIM International Classes, features, values and units for technical products Electrical, HVAC, plumbing, building materials, tools ETIM 10.0 (December 2024); ETIM 11.0 planned 1 December 2026 ETIM IDs per class, feature and value; 4 feature types; release migration; ETIM xChange and BMEcat ETIM export
ECLASS ECLASS e.V. Cross-industry classes and properties for products and services Industrial manufacturing, automation, procurement, automotive ECLASS 16.0 (27 November 2025); 17.0 planned end November 2026 Property identifiers; BASIC and ADVANCED structures; yearly migration
GS1 GDSN GS1 Trade item data shared through certified data pools Food, cosmetics, DIY retail, healthcare Confirm current release on gs1.org Packaging hierarchies by GTIN; target markets; data pool round trip
GS1 Digital Link GS1 GS1 identifiers as web addresses behind QR codes Food, cosmetics, electronics, medical devices Confirm current version on gs1.org Typed links per GTIN; batch content; link lifetime
BMEcat BME XML catalogue exchange Technical wholesale, industrial procurement 2005.2 (ECLASS specification of August 2023); 2005 most used Full and update transactions; ETIM and ECLASS guidelines; recipient-specific extensions
UNSPSC UNDP 8-digit procurement and spend classification Distribution, healthcare, public sector supply v26.0801 (August 2023, secondary source) Versioned codes; mapping from primary classification; channel overrides
schema.org Product schema.org community Structured data on product web pages All web-facing sectors Confirm current release on schema.org Clean identifiers; explicit variant structure; consistent attributes

How should a buyer use these standards in a PIM selection?

Use the standards to write requirements, build test data and score demos. In PIMvendors selections, standards enter the process at three points.

  1. Requirements: list each standard per customer and channel, with the version and exchange format. That list goes into the data model domain of the requirements checklist.
  2. Sample data: classify 20 to 50 real products in each required standard before the demos. Vendors then work on your data and your classification.
  3. Demo scenarios: each standard page on this hub lists 4 to 5 scenarios. Pick the ones that match your channels and script them using scenario-based vendor demos.

Two capabilities separate PIMs on standards. The first is multi-classification: one product, one set of attribute values, several standards. The second is release migration: a new ETIM or ECLASS release imported and applied without manual work per product. Both deserve a scenario in every demo where standards matter.

Release timing adds urgency in late 2026. ETIM 11.0 and ECLASS 17.0 are both planned for publication around the turn of November and December 2026. A PIM selected now will face its first migration in its first months of use. The Fit Finder gives a first pass on vendor fit before the standards scenarios are scripted.

1. Company size
2. Business model
3. Data complexity

Variants, relationships and technical attributes per product.

4. Regions where you need local support
5. Ecosystem
6. Needs that matter most (choose up to three)

Industry standards fix half the data model before the selection starts. A building materials supplier that ignores ETIM, or a food brand that ignores GDSN, will select the wrong PIM.

Frequently asked questions

Which product data standards matter most for PIM selection?

The standards that matter most are the ones your customers require. Technical wholesale requires ETIM and BMEcat, industrial procurement often requires ECLASS and UNSPSC, and retail requires GS1 GDSN. Web channels rely on schema.org Product, and packaging moves towards GS1 Digital Link. List the standards per customer and channel before writing PIM requirements.

Can one PIM support ETIM, ECLASS and GS1 at the same time?

One PIM can support ETIM, ECLASS and GS1 at the same time when its data model allows several classifications per product on one set of attribute values. That capability varies widely between vendors. PIMvendors tests it with a scenario that classifies the same sample products in two standards and exports both, live, during the demo.

How often do product data standards release new versions?

ECLASS publishes a release each year, with 16.0 in November 2025 and 17.0 planned for November 2026. ETIM 10.0 was published in December 2024 and ETIM 11.0 is planned for December 2026, with dynamic releases in between. A PIM must import new releases and migrate existing data without manual rework per product.
