GS1 Digital Link: definition and role in PIM

GS1 Digital Link is a GS1 standard that expresses GS1 identification keys such as the GTIN within web addresses, so one identifier can link to online information and services.

In PIM practice, GS1 Digital Link connects a physical product to its online data. A QR code or other data carrier encodes a web address that contains the GTIN. A resolver then sends the scanner to the right content, such as product information, instructions or a Digital Product Passport.

Illustrative example: a household appliance carries a QR code with a GS1 Digital Link. A consumer scan opens the product page and manual, while a recycler's scan of the same code can be routed to disassembly information.

In a selection, GS1 Digital Link matters for companies preparing for the Digital Product Passport and 2D barcodes on packaging. Buyers should check whether the PIM can supply the data behind each link per GTIN, language and audience. The resolver itself is usually a separate service.
