ESPR: definition and role in PIM

ESPR is an EU regulation that sets a framework for ecodesign requirements on products and introduces the Digital Product Passport.

In PIM practice, the ESPR matters because it makes product sustainability information a regulated data set. The ESPR entered into force on 18 July 2024. Specific requirements per product group follow through delegated acts, and the ban on destroying unsold clothes and shoes entered into application on 19 July 2026.

Illustrative example: an apparel company maps which of its attributes could fall under future ESPR requirements for textiles, such as material composition and durability information. It assigns owners and sources before any delegated act applies.

In a selection, the ESPR shifts requirements towards identifiers, versioned attributes, supplier data and publication through data carriers. Buyers should design those requirements now, even when the delegated act for their product group is still pending. Early preparation spreads the data work over several years.
