UNSPSC and PIM: procurement codes, versions and mappings

UNSPSC, the United Nations Standard Products and Services Code, is an 8-digit hierarchical code for classifying products and services in procurement and spend analysis. UNDP manages UNSPSC again after GS1 US managed it until the end of 2024. A PIM should store UNSPSC as a versioned classification per product, mapped from the primary ETIM, ECLASS or internal taxonomy.

What is UNSPSC and who governs it?

UNSPSC is a procurement classification, an 8-digit hierarchical code that identifies products and services for purchasing, cataloguing and spend analysis. UNDP and Dun & Bradstreet developed UNSPSC jointly in 1998. GS1 US managed the code from 2003, and the UNSPSC FAQ states that management transitions back to UNDP by the end of 2024. Secondary sources report that UNDP has handled change requests and updates since 1 January 2025.

The code has four primary levels of two digits each: segment, family, class and commodity. An optional fifth level, the business function, adds two digits. The use of UNSPSC codes is free, and the current codeset can be downloaded free as a PDF. Excel files are sold, and the TXT format is reserved for subscribers.

The latest release we could confirm is v26.0801 from August 2023, reported by secondary sources. Version numbers matter less than version diversity: procurement customers run different versions for years. UNSPSC is one of seven standards in the product data standards overview, and it appears as a secondary requirement in several profiles in PIM by industry.

Which industries use UNSPSC?

UNSPSC appears wherever a customer's procurement system classifies spend. That includes public sector buyers, large corporates with e-procurement platforms, healthcare providers and business marketplaces. The industry of the supplier matters less than the procurement maturity of its customers.

Three examples show the pattern:

  • Healthcare: GS1 Australia makes UNSPSC v25 the preferred version for healthcare products in its National Product Catalogue. GS1 New Zealand requires v25 for healthcare recipients, replacing v15 or v19 codes.
  • Business marketplaces: Amazon Business publishes a list of supported UNSPSC codes and tells customers to use it for purchasing policies and punchout configurations.
  • Industrial procurement: large buyers in manufacturing, energy and the public sector often request UNSPSC next to ECLASS in catalogue files.

In PIMvendors selections, UNSPSC is decisive for distributors and wholesalers with corporate and public sector customers, and for medical device manufacturers selling to hospitals. For brands selling through retail, UNSPSC rarely appears. Retail channels use GS1 classifications and their own category trees instead.

What does UNSPSC mean for the PIM data model?

UNSPSC adds a versioned code to the product, with no attributes behind it. UNSPSC tells a procurement system what a product is. It does not describe features, values or units. That makes UNSPSC simpler than ETIM or ECLASS in the data model, but harder in governance, because several versions run in parallel.

The PIM data model needs four elements:

Element Example PIM requirement
Code per product 8-digit commodity code Classification attribute or secondary taxonomy, validated against the codeset
Version v25 for a healthcare catalogue, a later version for a marketplace Version stored with each code, or one code per version per channel
Mapping rule ETIM or ECLASS class mapped to a UNSPSC commodity Mapping table maintained once, applied to all products in the class
Exceptions Product classified differently by one customer Channel-level override without breaking the default mapping

The mapping rule is where most effort goes. A distributor with 50,000 products cannot classify each product by hand. The PIM should derive the UNSPSC code from the primary classification, flag products where the mapping is ambiguous, and allow an override per channel.

What should you test in a PIM demo for UNSPSC?

Test UNSPSC as a mapped secondary classification with versions and overrides. PIMvendors' scenario method uses buyer sample data. Four scenarios cover the critical behaviour:

  1. Import the UNSPSC codeset version your largest procurement customer uses, and show it as a browsable taxonomy in the PIM.
  2. Map 10 ETIM or ECLASS classes to UNSPSC commodities, then show 200 sample products inheriting the codes without manual work.
  3. Override the UNSPSC code for one product for one customer channel, and show that the default mapping stays intact for all other channels.
  4. Load a second UNSPSC version, show the products whose codes changed between versions, and export both versions to two different channels.

Ask the vendor to show the audit trail for each mapping change: who changed it, when and for how many products. In regulated procurement such as healthcare, an incorrect code can block a product from a hospital catalogue. The Demo Theatre scenario library holds the script format, and AI auto-classification covers where AI suggestions help with the initial mapping.

Common UNSPSC pitfalls in PIM selections

The most common UNSPSC failure is a single code field with no version. In PIMvendors selections, five pitfalls recur:

  • No version attribute: the PIM holds one UNSPSC code, and nobody knows which codeset it came from.
  • Hand classification: product managers assign codes product by product, so the same product type ends up in several commodities.
  • UNSPSC used as the main taxonomy: teams with no ETIM or ECLASS model use UNSPSC for navigation and attributes, which UNSPSC was never designed for.
  • Deprecated codes: GS1 Australia replaces deprecated codes through data quality reports, which means suppliers without a version strategy receive error reports.
  • Licence confusion: buyers assume all UNSPSC formats are free, while the machine-readable files needed for import are sold or subscription-based.

AI auto-classification helps with the first mapping pass. PIMvendors' view is that AI suggestions need human review for regulated channels such as healthcare, where a wrong code has commercial consequences.

Where UNSPSC shows up across industries

UNSPSC requirements appear on three industry pages in this hub:

UNSPSC sits next to the feature-based standards. ECLASS and ETIM describe the product. BMEcat carries both kinds of classification to the customer. Write UNSPSC into the requirements as a mapped classification with version control and an audit trail.

In PIMvendors selections, UNSPSC is rarely a knock-out criterion on its own. It becomes one when a large share of revenue runs through procurement platforms or hospital catalogues. Rank it in the requirements prioritisation with the commercial owner of those channels in the room, so the weight reflects revenue at risk.

UNSPSC is rarely the model you design around. Keep it as a mapped, versioned code on the product, and make sure the PIM can deliver the version each procurement customer still runs.

Frequently asked questions

Which UNSPSC version is current?

The latest UNSPSC release we could confirm from published sources is v26.0801 from August 2023. Since 1 January 2025, UNDP handles UNSPSC change requests and updates, after GS1 US managed the code until the end of 2024. Buyers should check unspsc.org for newer releases and, more importantly, ask each procurement customer which version its systems use.

Is UNSPSC a replacement for ETIM or ECLASS?

UNSPSC is a procurement and spend classification. UNSPSC codes identify what a product is for purchasing and reporting purposes, and carry no product features. ETIM and ECLASS define the features, values and units that describe the product. Most manufacturers and distributors use UNSPSC as a mapped secondary code next to ETIM, ECLASS or an internal taxonomy.

Do I have to pay for UNSPSC?

The use of UNSPSC codes is free, and anyone can download the current codeset in PDF format at no cost, according to the UNSPSC FAQ. Excel versions of the codeset must be purchased, and the TXT format is available to subscribers. For a PIM import, buyers usually need a machine-readable format, so the cost question belongs in the business case.

How many levels does a UNSPSC code have?

A UNSPSC code has four primary levels of two digits each: segment, family, class and commodity, giving an 8-digit code. An optional fifth level of two digits, the business function, can be added. Most procurement customers request the commodity level, which is the most specific level of the 8-digit code.
