UNSPSC: definition and role in PIM

UNSPSC is a hierarchical classification code that groups products and services for procurement, spend analysis and e-commerce catalogues.

In PIM practice, UNSPSC codes are attached to products so that customers' procurement systems can categorise purchases and analyse spend. UNSPSC is less detailed than ETIM or ECLASS on product features, so it usually complements those standards and seldom replaces them.

Illustrative example: a laboratory supplies distributor sells to universities and hospitals that require a UNSPSC code on every catalogue line. The PIM stores the code per product family and exports it in the customer's catalogue format.

In a selection, UNSPSC support is usually a simple requirement: store the code, map it from internal categories and export it. Buyers should confirm whether the PIM can assign codes per family or category with overrides per product, which saves manual work across large ranges. Codes should be reviewed when the range changes, because procurement customers rely on them for spend reports.
