PCM: definition and role in PIM
PCM is a term for software and practices that create and manage the descriptive, marketing-oriented content of products, such as titles, descriptions, features and images.
In PIM practice, PCM overlaps heavily with PIM. Some vendors and analysts use PCM for content-focused tools aimed at marketing and e-commerce teams. They reserve PIM for systems with deeper data models, technical attributes and syndication. Others use the two terms as synonyms.
Illustrative example: an online retailer receives technical data from suppliers. It uses a content tool to write its own titles, descriptions and selling points for its webshop. That tool does product content management without governing the supplier's technical data.
In a selection, the PCM label signals a likely focus on marketing content. Buyers with complex technical ranges, ETIM or ECLASS classification or supplier onboarding should test those areas explicitly. That applies with extra force when a product is positioned as PCM. The deciding factor is the data model depth required by the buyer's own product families.
