Multi-tenant: definition and role in PIM
Multi-tenant is a SaaS architecture that serves many customers from one software instance, with logically separated data and configuration per customer.
In PIM practice, multi-tenant SaaS means all customers run the same version, receive updates at the same time and share infrastructure. Single-tenant deployments give each customer its own instance, with more control over upgrade timing and isolation, often at higher cost.
Illustrative example: a brand on a multi-tenant PIM receives a new feature for all customers in a monthly release. A group with strict security policies chooses a single-tenant deployment to control upgrade dates and isolate its data.
In a selection, buyers should ask which tenancy model each vendor uses and what it means for upgrades, customisation, performance isolation and data residency. Multi-tenant products usually limit deep customisation, which keeps upgrades simple. Buyers with strict security policies should also ask for the vendor's certifications and the EU hosting locations for their tenant.
