PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

SaaS: definition and role in PIM

SaaS is a software delivery model that has the vendor host, operate and update the application while customers access it by subscription.

In PIM practice, most new PIM implementations are SaaS. The vendor manages infrastructure, upgrades and security, and customers pay a recurring subscription, often priced by users, SKUs, channels, locales or modules. Some vendors also offer private cloud or on-premise deployment.

Illustrative example: a mid-market manufacturer moves from an on-premise PIM that needs a project for every upgrade to a SaaS PIM with quarterly releases. Its IT team stops managing servers and spends that time on integrations.

In a selection, SaaS changes what buyers should check. Relevant points include release cadence, change notices, data residency in the EU, exit terms, API limits per tier and price escalation clauses. The total cost of ownership should cover subscription growth over at least five years. Sandbox environments for testing and training are another point to confirm in the offer.
