PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

Longlist: definition and role in PIM

Longlist is an initial set of candidate vendors that could plausibly meet the buyer's needs, before structured screening narrows it down.

In PIM practice, a longlist usually holds 10 to 15 vendors (PIMvendors estimate) selected on fit with industry, company size, architecture, regions and key requirements. PIMvendors tracks 250+ PIM systems on its All PIM solutions list, so the longlist step removes most of the market quickly.

Illustrative example: a mid-market distributor in Belgium filters for SaaS products with ETIM support and Dutch and French interfaces. It also requires an ERP connector for its platform and partners in the Benelux. Twelve vendors remain on the longlist.

In a selection, the longlist should follow from the buyer's profile, never from whoever made contact first. Lists sorted alphabetically and filtered by requirements keep the step neutral. The next step narrows the longlist to a shortlist of three to five vendors.
