PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

Akeneo vs Inriver: which PIM fits your situation

Akeneo and Inriver are both SaaS PIMs for manufacturers and brands, with different packaging. Akeneo bundles a DAM and an Activation module and offers a free Community Edition. Inriver sells four quote-only plans that add syndication, product relations and Digital Shelf Analytics as you move up. The deciding factor is your DAM strategy and which channel modules you need.

Choose Akeneo when

  • You want a DAM inside the PIM subscription instead of connecting a separate DAM.
  • You want to prototype your data model on a free open source Community Edition first.
  • You sell through Shopify, BigCommerce or commercetools and want a broad connector catalogue.

Choose Inriver when

  • You already run Adobe AEM Assets, Bynder or Aprimo and want the PIM to connect to it.
  • You run SAP S/4HANA Cloud and value a connector certified by SAP.
  • You want digital shelf analytics and syndication modules from the same PIM vendor.

The core difference

Akeneo bundles more into each package, while Inriver adds capability plan by plan. Both are SaaS PIMs aimed at manufacturers and brands, and both sit in the mid-market in PIMvendors' assessment. The contrast is in packaging and ecosystem, as the PIM vendor directory shows across 18 platforms.

Akeneo includes a DAM with an integrated CDN and one Activation channel in every package. Its App Store lists 69 connector apps, and a free Community Edition under OSL 3.0 gives a self-hosted starting point. AI description generation and a Data Architect Agent sit in the entry package.

Inriver sells four quote-only plans. Core adds single-click syndication and a brand asset storefront, Professional adds product relations and Digital Shelf Analytics, and Enterprise adds more endpoints and markets. Inriver connects to enterprise DAMs through adapters for Adobe AEM Assets and partner connectors for Bynder and Aprimo.

Scenario by scenario

Five scenarios from the demo scenario library show where Akeneo and Inriver are likely to behave differently. Run them on your own data, following PIMvendors' scenario-based demo method, and record what each vendor shows live.

Provide 300 images, 40 PDF datasheets and 10 videos with SKU-coded file names. Akeneo should show its own DAM applying the naming rules. Inriver should show the asset flow with the DAM you actually run, whether its brand asset storefront or an AEM Assets or Bynder adapter. Watch for one-by-one uploads or custom scripts for file-name rules.

SC-06: Model kits, spare parts and accessories

Provide one kit of 6 components, 10 spare parts and 5 accessories shared across products. Inriver lists product relations for upsell, cross-sell and bundles in its Professional plan, so confirm your quoted plan includes it. Akeneo documents Composable Products for variations and bundles. In both, change a part number and check the relations stay intact.

SC-25: Create items from ERP with a clear master split

Provide 2,000 ERP items and state which attributes the ERP masters. Akeneo offers an S/4HANA accelerator, and Inriver has a SAP-certified S/4HANA Cloud connector announced in May 2026. Check that ownership is configurable per attribute and that enriched values survive the next sync.

SC-14: Export a retailer or marketplace feed

Provide 500 products and one live retailer template. Akeneo includes one Activation channel per package, and Inriver offers the Syndicate Advance module. Ask each vendor what an extra channel costs and who updates the mapping when the template changes.

SC-19: Generate channel descriptions with AI and approval

Provide 50 products, a tone guide and two channel length rules. Akeneo's AI description generation and Inriver's Inspire AI agents should both write into a draft field that needs approval. Fail either vendor if generated text goes straight to the live description.

Pricing model contrast

Both vendors quote most of their price, but they build it from different blocks. Akeneo prices by package plus add-ons, and Inriver prices by plan, organisation size and modules.

Akeneo lists Growth with a starting price of USD 0 per year, and Advanced and Premium on quote. The Supplier Data Manager, commerce apps and PX Insights for lower tiers are add-ons. The Akeneo pricing page tracks package contents.

Inriver publishes no prices. Its four plans target organisations from small businesses up to multinationals, and syndication, relations and Digital Shelf Analytics arrive at different tiers. The Inriver pricing page tracks plan contents.

Cost driver Akeneo Inriver
Main price lever Package tier and add-on modules Plan tier, organisation size and modules
Public list prices Growth entry price only None
DAM cost Included DAM Separate DAM licence if you need more than the storefront

Price both on the same scope. A cheaper Inriver plan plus a separate DAM can cost more than an Akeneo package, and the reverse also happens.

Migrating between Akeneo and Inriver

Migration between Akeneo and Inriver is mostly about mapping structure, relations and assets, because both SaaS platforms expose APIs for bulk transfer. Plan a trial run on one product family before you sign.

Map these elements first:

  1. Attribute types, value lists, units and localised values.
  2. Variant structures, because Inriver's variant model is not publicly documented and must be confirmed.
  3. Product relations, such as Inriver's upsell, cross-sell and bundle links against Akeneo's Composable Products.
  4. Assets: moving from Akeneo's DAM to an external DAM changes where files live and who owns them.
  5. Channel mappings and completeness rules, which usually need rebuilding.

On the contract side, secure data export rights in a documented format, asset export with metadata and an overlap period for both systems. Check add-on and module terms, because they can renew on different dates. The guide to replacing your PIM covers the full sequence.

How to decide

Choose between Akeneo and Inriver on DAM strategy, ERP landscape and channel ambitions. Neither platform is better overall, and your existing stack usually decides.

  • DAM strategy: a DAM inside the PIM favours Akeneo, while an existing AEM Assets, Bynder or Aprimo estate favours a closer look at Inriver.
  • ERP landscape: SAP S/4HANA Cloud buyers should compare Inriver's certified connector with Akeneo's S/4HANA accelerator in SC-25.
  • Channel ambitions: digital shelf analytics from the PIM vendor sits in Inriver's Professional plan and in Akeneo's PX Insights.
  • Commerce platform: check which side offers a vendor-built connector for your webshop.

Read the Akeneo profile and Inriver profile, then test fit in the PIM Fit Finder. Build the demo script from the demo scenario library.

Akeneo and Inriver both look complete in a scripted demo. Put your own variant family, your DAM and your ERP extract in front of them, and the differences show up within an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Is Akeneo or Inriver better for manufacturers?

Neither Akeneo nor Inriver is better for every manufacturer. Both target manufacturers and brands. Akeneo includes a DAM and offers a free Community Edition, while Inriver adds syndication, product relations and Digital Shelf Analytics through higher plans and has a SAP-certified S/4HANA Cloud connector. Test both with scenarios SC-06 and SC-25 on your own product data before deciding.

Does Inriver have a built-in DAM like Akeneo?

Akeneo lists a DAM with an integrated content delivery network in its package matrix. Inriver's Core plan includes a self-serve storefront for brand assets, and Inriver offers adapters for Adobe AEM Assets plus partner connectors for Bynder and Aprimo. Ask Inriver which asset features are native in your quoted plan, and test asset linking with scenario SC-09.

Which is cheaper, Akeneo or Inriver?

No reliable public comparison exists, because Inriver publishes no prices and Akeneo lists only a Growth entry price, with Advanced and Premium on quote. Total cost depends on the modules your scenarios need, such as supplier onboarding, syndication and shelf analytics. Request three-year quotes from both vendors that cover the same scope, users and SKU growth.

Can Akeneo and Inriver both connect to SAP?

Akeneo offers an accelerator that delivers core product data from SAP S/4HANA to Akeneo Product Cloud, plus an SAP Commerce Cloud accelerator. Inriver announced an SAP-certified S/4HANA Cloud connector in May 2026 and offers an SAP Commerce Cloud adapter. Test either option with scenario SC-25, checking that enriched attributes are never overwritten by the next ERP sync.

Is this comparison based on hands-on experience with Inriver?

PIMvendors has hands-on consulting experience with Akeneo. Inriver falls outside the platforms PIMvendors has implemented, so the Inriver side of this comparison draws on public documentation and on PIMvendors selection work in which Inriver took part. Every Inriver fact on this page links to a vendor or press source checked on 14 October 2026.
