Product relationship: definition and role in PIM

Product relationship is a data model link that connects one product to another with a defined type, such as accessory, spare part, replacement, cross-sell or upsell.

In PIM practice, relationships are typed and directional. A drill relates to compatible batteries as accessories, to its successor as replacement, and to spare parts with quantities. Relationships can carry their own attributes, such as quantity or position in an exploded view.

Illustrative example: an automotive aftermarket supplier links each brake pad to the vehicles it fits. Matching discs appear as cross-sell, and the predecessor as replaced item. The webshop shows the relationships, and service teams use the spare parts links.

In a selection, buyers should list their relationship types and volumes. Spare parts and fitment data can reach millions of links, which tests PIM performance and bulk editing. Channel exports of relationships deserve a scenario, since marketplaces support them in very different ways.
