How long does a PIM implementation take?
PIMvendors estimate: a focused PIM implementation takes 3 to 5 months and a mid-sized one 6 to 9 months from contract to go-live. Multi-country enterprise programmes with several ERPs or brands take 9 to 18 months, in phased releases. Data migration, integrations and internal decision speed drive most of the timeline.
PIMvendors estimate: a focused PIM implementation takes 3 to 5 months, a mid-sized one 6 to 9 months to the first go-live, and a multi-country enterprise programme 9 to 18 months in phased releases. Data quality, integrations and decision speed drive the range.
A typical first release runs through 5 phases:
- Design: data model, workflows, roles and integration design.
- Configuration: the PIM set up to the design, in short iterations.
- Integration: ERP inbound, channels outbound, DAM and other systems.
- Migration: cleansing, mapping and loading product data, with test cycles.
- Training and go-live: key users first, then the wider team.
Three factors lengthen projects most: a data model designed during implementation, poor source data that needs cleansing, and integrations with legacy systems. All three shrink when the selection already produced a data model and validated requirements, as in the PIMvendors method.
Plan go-live as a first release with a limited scope, for example 1 brand, 1 country or 2 channels. Later waves add product families, languages and channels. A phased plan delivers value earlier and reduces risk.
Ask each shortlisted partner for a plan with named roles and milestones, and compare it with reference projects of similar scope.
