How do I migrate from one PIM to another?
Migrating between PIMs starts with redesigning the data model, followed by mapping, cleansing and moving data in trial runs while integrations are rebuilt. Avoid a one-to-one copy of the old structure. PIMvendors recommends at least 3 full migration rehearsals before cutover, with the licence overlap kept short and defined.
A PIM-to-PIM migration is a redesign project with a data move inside it. Copying the old data model one to one carries every historical workaround into the new platform.
Run the migration in 6 steps:
- Analyse the current PIM: data model, attributes in use, workflows, integrations and exports. Mark what is obsolete.
- Redesign the target data model, using the new platform's strengths and current requirements.
- Map every attribute, option list, relation and asset from source to target, with an owner per mapping.
- Cleanse data at the source where possible, and set quality rules in the target.
- Run trial migrations with validation reports. PIMvendors recommends at least 3 full rehearsals before cutover.
- Rebuild integrations and channel exports, then cut over per channel or per product family.
Contracts matter here too. Check the export rights and formats in the old contract, the notice period, and whether a licence overlap is needed. Keep the overlap as short as possible, because two licences and two sets of processes cost money and attention.
In PIMvendors engagements, replacement projects follow the same sequence as first selections: Data, then Process, then People, then Tooling. Users of the old PIM have strong habits, so involve them early in the scenarios for the new platform.
