Stibo Systems vs Syndigo: which PIM fits your situation
Stibo Systems and Syndigo both sell multidomain MDM, from different directions. Stibo Systems STEP is governance-led master data management for large enterprises, on Azure SaaS or on-premise. Syndigo combines MDM and PIM from Riversand with a brand-to-retailer network and the 1WorldSync GDSN data pool. The deciding factor is whether network reach belongs with your MDM vendor.
Choose Stibo Systems when
- Large enterprises that put governed master data across product, customer, supplier and location first
- Organisations that need an on-premise option and accept that new features ship to SaaS
- Manufacturers with SAP material master integration and complex hierarchies across business units
Choose Syndigo when
- Brands and retailers that want MDM and a brand-to-retailer content network from one vendor
- Companies that publish through GDSN and want the data pool from their MDM vendor
- Consumer brands that want ratings and reviews and social proof alongside product content
The core difference
Stibo Systems leads with governance, and Syndigo leads with the network. Stibo Systems, based in Aarhus and owned by the Stibo Foundation, sells STEP as multidomain master data management covering product, customer, supplier, location, sustainability and business partner data. Syndigo, based in Chicago, combines MDM and PIM from Riversand with a brand-to-retailer content network, the 1WorldSync GDSN data pool and PowerReviews ratings and reviews.
Both vendors claim multidomain scope, so the overlap is real. The difference sits at the edges. Stibo adds deployment choice, an SAP material master connector and SmartSync for Salesforce. Syndigo adds 3,500+ retailers in its network as a vendor figure, plus validation against nearly 4,000 retailer requirements.
Both vendors have changed recently. Syndigo acquired 1WorldSync in September 2025 and is combining overlapping products. Stibo Systems now ships feature updates to SaaS customers only, according to its 2026.1 documentation.
AI investment follows each vendor's centre. Stibo launched ProductGen AI for content in 2025, an MCP Server that connects AI agents to governed master data in June 2026, and the AgentWorkx engine in September 2026. Syndigo lists Synapse as agentic PXM and AI GoPilots. PIMvendors' view is that AI scales for descriptions, translation, extraction and classification, and remains unreliable for compliance data and end-to-end agentic workflows.
PIMvendors has hands-on consulting experience with both Stibo STEP and Syndigo. Both have sourced records in the PIM vendor directory.

Scenario by scenario
These five tests from the demo scenario library target points where Stibo STEP and Syndigo are likely to behave differently. Run each on your own sample data and recipients.
- SC-13, publish products to GS1 GDSN. Syndigo operates a data pool, so test validation before sending, packaging hierarchy and the recipient response loop. Stibo publishes to data pools through connectors, so ask which pool, which connector and who owns errors.
- SC-25, create items from ERP with a clear master split. Stibo lists an SAP material master connector. Syndigo's App Marketplace lists no ERP app on the page reviewed, so ask for the route. Test attribute ownership and failed record handling with your own extract.
- SC-22, restrict permissions by attribute group and market. Multidomain programmes add roles from finance, procurement and sales. Log in as four roles in each platform and check that locale and attribute-group rights combine without custom code.
- SC-14, export a retailer or marketplace feed. Syndigo validates against retailer requirements in its network. Stibo uses Product Data Syndication and partner connectors. Ask both to show your top retailer template and a delta export on the second run.
- SC-29, search and filter a catalogue of 500,000 SKUs. Both vendors sell to large catalogues. Load your attribute structure with four locales and time search and combined filters live, on the environment you will buy.
Pricing model contrast
Both vendors quote, and both can bundle more scope than you need on day one. Stibo Systems publishes no prices. Ask for a product-only quote alongside any multidomain scope, and for the cost of environments, connectors and ProductGen AI. SaaS can be procured through Microsoft Azure Marketplace.
Syndigo also publishes no prices. Ask whether MDM, PIM, network services, GDSN and ratings and reviews are sold as one subscription or as separate products. Ask too whether retailer connections carry per-endpoint or per-recipient fees.
Contract protection differs by vendor. For Stibo on-premise buyers, the SaaS-only feature policy calls for a priced SaaS migration path. For Syndigo, the 1WorldSync integration calls for written commitments on which platform you run and who pays for any migration. PIMvendors' negotiation advice applies to both: anchor high and keep the deeper discount as fallback. The negotiation guide covers the sequence.
Migrating between Stibo Systems and Syndigo
Migration between Stibo STEP and Syndigo is an enterprise MDM re-platforming. It touches every domain in scope and often every retailer connection. Plan three workstreams.
- Data model mapping. Export attributes, hierarchies, references, match and merge rules and governance workflows per domain. Customer and supplier match rules rarely transfer one to one, so rebuild and retest them. Reconcile record counts per domain.
- Syndication and GDSN. Moving into Syndigo means connecting retailers through its network and possibly moving GDSN data pools. Moving into STEP means rebuilding retailer connections through syndication connectors. Plan GDSN changes with recipients and GS1.
- Contract terms. Check notice periods, export formats and exit assistance. Ask how long the old platform stays available read-only for audit purposes.
A coexistence pattern is also possible: STEP as the governing MDM with a network vendor handling retailer syndication. Test that pattern with SC-25 and SC-14 before committing to a full replacement. Integration of acquired products often takes several years, so check how Syndigo's roadmap affects the module you migrate to. The guide to replacing your PIM covers parallel running.
How to decide
The choice between Stibo Systems and Syndigo turns on where the value of your programme sits. Work through these criteria.
- Governance versus reach. If governed master data across domains is the main outcome, weigh Stibo STEP. If reaching retailers through one network is the main outcome, weigh Syndigo.
- Deployment. On-premise is possible only with Stibo, under its SaaS-only feature policy.
- GDSN. Brands publishing to GDSN should compare Syndigo's own data pool with Stibo's connector route in SC-13.
- ERP. SAP-centric manufacturers should test both ERP routes in SC-25.
- AI evidence. Run SC-19 and SC-21 with ProductGen and Synapse on your own products. Stibo's MCP Server gives agents access to governed data, so ask both vendors how agent actions are approved and logged.
Read the Stibo Systems vendor profile and the Syndigo vendor profile, then run your profile through the PIM Fit Finder. Script both demos from the demo scenarios library.
Stibo STEP and Syndigo both say multidomain, so test the domains you will actually govern. Then decide whether the retailer network is a reason to buy or a connector you can add later.

Frequently asked questions
Are Stibo Systems and Syndigo both MDM vendors?
Yes. Stibo Systems positions STEP as multidomain MDM covering product, customer, supplier, location, sustainability and business partner data. Syndigo lists MDM as one shared record for products, suppliers and locations, with customer domain management from its 2021 Riversand acquisition. Syndigo also runs a brand-to-retailer content network and GDSN data pool, which Stibo does not operate.
Does Syndigo or Stibo Systems offer on-premise deployment?
Stibo Systems offers STEP as SaaS on Microsoft Azure and on-premise, with feature updates exclusive to SaaS customers according to its 2026.1 documentation. Syndigo is offered as SaaS, and Riversand is described as cloud-native SaaS. Buyers with on-premise requirements can only shortlist Stibo of these two, and should price the later SaaS move.
Can Stibo STEP publish to GDSN like Syndigo?
Stibo Systems syndicates product data to retailers, marketplaces and data pools through connectors, including a PDX syndication connector. Syndigo operates its own GDSN data pool through 1WorldSync. Run scenario SC-13 with both vendors on your own GTINs and recipients, and check that recipient responses return to the product record in the PIM.
Which vendor changed more recently, Stibo Systems or Syndigo?
Syndigo acquired 1WorldSync in September 2025 and is combining overlapping products and networks. Stibo Systems is owned by the Stibo Foundation and changed its update model so that new features reach SaaS customers only. Both changes affect long contracts, so ask each vendor for a written roadmap covering the modules you buy.
Do Stibo Systems and Syndigo publish prices?
Neither vendor publishes prices on the pages reviewed on 14 October 2026. Both quote. Ask for a three-year price covering the domains and modules your demo scenarios used, including environments, connectors, GDSN and AI. Stibo SaaS can be procured through Microsoft Azure Marketplace.
