Salsify vs Stibo Systems: which PIM fits your situation
Salsify and Stibo Systems serve different centres of the data stack. Salsify is a SaaS product experience platform for consumer brands, built around a retailer network and a GS1-certified GDSN data pool. Stibo Systems STEP is multidomain master data management for large enterprises, on Azure SaaS or on-premise. The deciding factor is whether shelf or governance drives the programme.
Choose Salsify when
- Consumer brands whose main job is publishing validated content to many retailer endpoints
- Brands that want GDSN publication and digital shelf analytics from the same SaaS platform
- Retailers that need suppliers to submit content through a schema-checked onboarding experience
Choose Stibo Systems when
- Large enterprises that govern product, customer, supplier and location data on one foundation
- Manufacturers and distributors with deep SAP material master integration and complex hierarchies
- Buyers that need an on-premise option and accept that new features ship to SaaS
The core difference
Salsify optimises the path to the retailer shelf, and Stibo Systems optimises governance across master data domains. Salsify, based in Boston, sells a SaaS product experience platform whose PXM Network validates content against retailer endpoint requirements and includes a GS1-certified GDSN data pool. Stibo Systems, based in Aarhus, sells STEP as multidomain MDM for product, customer, supplier, location, sustainability and business partner data.
Both platforms cover PIM work such as enrichment, syndication and AI-assisted content. The emphasis differs. Salsify adds Digital Shelf Analytics and Supplier Experience Management for retailers onboarding suppliers. Stibo adds shared governance across domains, an SAP material master connector and SmartSync for Salesforce.
AI investment follows the same split. Salsify embeds Angie, a PXM agent for tasks such as channel setup, formulas and workflows. Stibo Systems launched ProductGen AI for content in 2025, an MCP Server for AI agents in June 2026 and the AgentWorkx engine in September 2026. PIMvendors' view is that AI scales for descriptions, translation, extraction and classification, and remains unreliable for compliance data and end-to-end agentic workflows.
Ownership is moving on one side. Salsify agreed in July 2026 to be acquired by Cinven, with no closing confirmed in sources checked on 14 October 2026. Stibo Systems is owned by the Stibo Foundation and ships new features to SaaS customers only.

Scenario by scenario
These five tests from the demo scenario library target points where Salsify and Stibo STEP are likely to behave differently. Run each on your own sample data.
- SC-13, publish products to GS1 GDSN. Salsify should publish from its own data pool, so check that recipient responses return to the product record. Stibo syndicates to data pools through connectors, so ask which pool and who owns the response loop.
- SC-14, export a retailer or marketplace feed. Salsify's network validates against endpoint requirements. Check that your top three retailers are connected endpoints. For Stibo, test mapping maintenance by a business user and delta export on the second run.
- SC-25, create items from ERP with a clear master split. Stibo lists an SAP material master connector, and Salsify names SAP and Oracle integrations. Test attribute-level ownership, ERP updates on enriched items and the failure log.
- SC-22, restrict permissions by attribute group and market. Multidomain programmes add roles, and retailer supplier portals add external users. Log in as four roles in each platform and check locale and attribute-group rights without custom code.
- SC-24, prove the history of a compliance attribute. Ask both vendors to show every value an allergen or hazard attribute held, and which value each channel received on a given date. Export the history for a non-technical auditor.
Pricing model contrast
Both vendors quote, so the comparison rests on module scope. Salsify publishes no plan structure on the pages reviewed. Ask whether network endpoints, the GDSN data pool, SXM, Digital Shelf Analytics and AI features sit in the base subscription or carry separate fees.
Stibo Systems also publishes no prices. Its multidomain scope means a quote can include domains you do not need yet, so request a product-only price alongside the full scope. Ask how environments, connectors and ProductGen AI are priced. SaaS can be procured through Microsoft Azure Marketplace.
Two contract risks sit on opposite sides. For Salsify, the pending Cinven acquisition calls for renewal caps and change-of-control language. For Stibo on-premise, the SaaS-only feature policy calls for a priced SaaS migration path. PIMvendors' negotiation advice applies to both: anchor high and keep the deeper discount as fallback. The PIM pricing models guide compares module and domain-based pricing.
Migrating between Salsify and Stibo Systems
Movement between Salsify and Stibo STEP often follows a change in programme scope. Brands add STEP when master data governance becomes the bottleneck, and some move retailer syndication to Salsify while keeping an MDM. A full replacement needs three workstreams.
- Data model mapping. Export attributes, value lists, hierarchies, relations and channel completeness rules. Moving into STEP means deciding which attributes become shared master data. Moving into Salsify means mapping product content to retailer requirements per endpoint.
- Channels and data pools. Rebuild every retailer mapping. A move into or out of Salsify's GDSN data pool needs planning with recipients and GS1, so schedule it outside peak listing periods.
- Contract terms. Check notice periods, export formats and exit assistance. Archive audit history in a readable format, because compliance attributes may need proof of past values.
Some buyers run both platforms in one stack, with STEP as master and Salsify for syndication. Test that pattern with SC-25 and SC-14 before committing. The product data stack guide explains where each layer sits.
How to decide
The choice between Salsify and Stibo Systems follows from what drives your programme. Work through these criteria.
- Channel mix. If most revenue runs through retailers and marketplaces, weigh Salsify's network and GDSN data pool heavily. If it runs through distributors, own webshops and B2B portals, weigh STEP's governance.
- Domain scope. Customer, supplier or location data in scope point to Stibo STEP. Product content only keeps both options open.
- Deployment. On-premise is possible only with Stibo, under its SaaS-only feature policy.
- Ownership risk. Price the Cinven transition into a Salsify contract.
- AI evidence. Run SC-19 with Salsify's Angie and Stibo's ProductGen on your own products, with recorded human approval.

Salsify and Stibo STEP answer different first questions: who reads your data at the shelf, and who governs it across domains. Make both vendors run SC-13 and SC-25 on your data before anyone compares slides.

Frequently asked questions
Is Salsify a PIM or an MDM?
Salsify positions itself as product experience management, with PIM, syndication, a GDSN data pool, digital shelf analytics and supplier onboarding on one SaaS platform. Stibo Systems positions STEP as multidomain master data management covering product, customer, supplier, location and business partner data. A buyer needing governed customer or supplier master data alongside product data should test Stibo STEP for that scope.
Can Stibo STEP syndicate to retailers like Salsify?
Stibo Systems offers Product Data Syndication to e-commerce platforms, retailers, marketplaces and data pools, and lists a PDX syndication connector. Salsify runs its own PXM Network, which validates content against retailer endpoint requirements, plus a GS1-certified GDSN data pool. Test both with scenarios SC-13 and SC-14 on your own top retailers before scoring syndication.
What does the Cinven deal mean for a Salsify selection?
Salsify agreed in July 2026 to be acquired by Cinven, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions. No closing was confirmed in the sources checked on 14 October 2026. Buyers signing now should negotiate renewal caps, written roadmap commitments for the modules they buy and change-of-control language. Stibo Systems remains owned by the Stibo Foundation.
Which is easier to run day to day, Salsify or Stibo STEP?
Day-to-day effort depends on scope. Salsify runs as SaaS only, so the vendor carries hosting and upgrades. Stibo STEP runs as SaaS on Azure or on-premise, and its multidomain scope usually involves more roles and governance rules. Ask business users to complete scenarios SC-07 and SC-22 in both platforms and record where they needed help.
Do Salsify and Stibo Systems publish prices?
Neither vendor publishes prices on the pages reviewed on 14 October 2026. Salsify and Stibo Systems both quote. Ask each for a three-year price covering the exact modules your demo scenarios used, including syndication, GDSN, supplier onboarding, environments and AI. Stibo SaaS can also be procured through Microsoft Azure Marketplace.
