Should we choose SaaS or on-premise PIM?

SaaS is the default choice for most new PIM projects, and on-premise or private cloud remains the right answer for a defined set of constraints. The decision belongs in the Platform and vendor domain of the requirements, written down before vendors present their preferred model.

SaaS fits when:

• The team wants vendor-managed hosting, security patches and upgrades.
• Requirements fit configuration, with extensions through APIs.
• IT capacity for running infrastructure is limited.

On-premise or private cloud fits when:

• Contracts or regulation require control over data location or infrastructure.
• The data model or user interface needs customisation beyond configuration.
• Integration with on-premise ERP or PLM systems runs best inside the company network.

Check three points with every vendor. First, confirm which deployment models the vendor supports today, and whether on-premise receives the same release schedule. Second, ask where SaaS data is hosted and which certifications cover it. Third, check the cost of moving between models later.
