PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

PLM: definition and role in PIM

PLM is a software category that manages a product's engineering data from concept through design, change control and release to manufacturing.

In PIM practice, PLM sits upstream of the PIM for manufacturers. PLM holds specifications, bills of materials, CAD models and engineering change orders. At release, selected technical attributes flow from PLM, sometimes through ERP, into the PIM, where they are classified, translated and published.

Illustrative example: an industrial manufacturer releases a new valve in PLM with dimensions, materials and pressure ratings. The PIM receives those values, maps them to the matching ETIM class features and adds marketing copy before launch.

In a selection, PLM matters for integration scope and for attribute ownership. Engineering values should have one source, so the PIM must receive them from PLM instead of retyping them. Buyers should check how a PIM handles engineering changes after publication, including notifications to owners of dependent content.
