Inriver vs Salsify: which PIM fits your situation
Inriver and Salsify are both SaaS-only platforms with different centres of gravity. Inriver is a PIM for manufacturers and brands, tiered into four plans with syndication and shelf analytics as modules. Salsify is a product experience platform built around its own retailer network and GDSN data pool. The deciding factor is how much of your value sits in retailer syndication.
Choose Inriver when
- Manufacturers that need SAP S/4HANA integration and product data control before channel syndication
- Buyers that want plan tiers matched to organisation size and only the modules their scenarios need
- Teams that sell through own webshops and distributors more than through large retailer networks
Choose Salsify when
- Consumer brands whose main job is publishing validated content to many retailer and marketplace endpoints
- Brands that need GDSN publication from the same platform that holds their marketing content
- Retailers that want suppliers to deliver content through a schema-checked onboarding experience
The core difference
Inriver starts from product data control, and Salsify starts from the retailer shelf. Inriver sells a SaaS PIM for manufacturers and brands, tiered into four plans, with syndication and Digital Shelf Analytics added as you move up. Salsify sells a product experience management platform whose PXM Network validates content against retailer endpoint requirements and includes a GS1-certified GDSN data pool.
Both run as SaaS only, and neither publishes prices. The practical difference shows up in where each vendor puts its connectors. Inriver's recent investment went into an SAP-certified S/4HANA Cloud connector and commerce adapters. Salsify's centre is the network between brands and retailers, plus Supplier Experience Management for retailers onboarding suppliers.
PIMvendors has hands-on consulting experience with Salsify. Inriver is outside that list, so the Inriver side of this comparison draws on public documentation and selection work. Both vendors appear in the alphabetical PIM vendor directory with sourced records.

Scenario by scenario
The scenarios below come from the PIMvendors demo scenario library. Each one targets a point where Inriver and Salsify are likely to behave differently, so run them on your own sample data.
- SC-14, export a retailer or marketplace feed. Salsify's PXM Network validates content against endpoint requirements, so test whether your specific retailers are connected endpoints. For Inriver, test the Syndicate Advance route on the same retailer template. Watch who maintains the mapping when the retailer changes its template.
- SC-13, publish products to GS1 GDSN. Salsify should publish from its own data pool, so check that recipient responses return to the product record. Inriver documents no own data pool on the pages reviewed, so ask which partner route it proposes and who owns errors.
- SC-25, create items from ERP with a clear master split. Inriver's S/4HANA Cloud connector is SAP-certified, so test attribute-level ownership and what happens on an ERP update. Run the same test with Salsify's SAP integration and compare the failure log.
- SC-04, create a variant family with 40 sizes and colours. Neither vendor documents its variant model on the pages reviewed. Make both build all 40 variants live, with inheritance and one visible override.
- SC-02, supplier self-service onboarding with validation. Salsify SXM checks schema requirements, and Inriver lists a Content Onboarding product plus a partner portal. Check whether approved supplier records land in the main catalogue without a manual transfer.
Pricing model contrast
Both vendors quote, so the comparison depends on which modules your scenarios used. Inriver publishes plan names and audiences but no prices: Foundation for small businesses and divisions, Core for mid-market, Professional for larger businesses, Enterprise for multinationals. Syndication appears from Core and Digital Shelf Analytics from Professional, so a buyer who needs shelf analytics should expect at least a Professional quote.
Salsify publishes no plan structure on the pages reviewed. Ask whether network endpoints, the GDSN data pool, SXM, Digital Shelf Analytics and AI features sit in the base subscription or carry separate fees. Request a three-year price including renewals.
The pending Cinven acquisition adds a contract task for Salsify buyers. Negotiate renewal caps, a written roadmap commitment for the modules you buy, and change-of-control language. PIMvendors' negotiation advice applies to both vendors: anchor high on discount and keep the deeper discount as fallback. The PIM pricing models guide explains how module and tier pricing compares over five years.
Migrating between Inriver and Salsify
Migration between Inriver and Salsify is mainly a data model and channel mapping exercise, because both are SaaS and no infrastructure moves. Plan for three workstreams.
- Data model mapping. Export the full attribute dictionary, value lists, relations and completeness rules from the current platform. Relations such as bundles and cross-sells need explicit mapping, because each platform stores them in its own structure. Rebuild variant structures from the parent and child definitions, then reconcile record counts.
- Channel and data pool connections. Every retailer, marketplace and feed mapping must be rebuilt in the target platform. A move into or out of Salsify's GDSN data pool needs planning with recipients and GS1, so schedule it outside peak listing periods.
- Contract and exit terms. Check notice periods, data export formats and the vendor's exit assistance before signing. Ask for asset exports with metadata and history, since audit trails rarely migrate in full.
Run both platforms in parallel until the target passes reconciliation on record counts, completeness per channel and retailer acceptance. Archive the old audit trail in a readable format, because compliance attributes may need proof of past values.
The data migration guide covers cut-over planning and reconciliation in more detail.
How to decide
The choice between Inriver and Salsify follows from where your product data problem starts. Use these criteria in order.
- Channel mix. If most revenue runs through large retailers and marketplaces, weigh Salsify's network and GDSN data pool heavily. If it runs through distributors, own webshops and print, weigh Inriver's PIM depth and ERP connectors.
- ERP centre. Buyers on SAP S/4HANA Cloud should test Inriver's certified connector against Salsify's SAP integration in SC-25.
- Supplier direction. Retailers onboarding suppliers should test Salsify SXM. Manufacturers onboarding their own suppliers should compare both onboarding routes in SC-02.
- Contract risk. Price the Cinven transition into the Salsify contract, and confirm Inriver's module boundaries in writing.
- AI scope. Both vendors now market agents: Inriver's specialised agents and Salsify's Angie. Test them on your own data in SC-19, with a recorded human approval before publication, and treat agent claims as roadmap until shown live.
Read the full Inriver vendor profile and Salsify vendor profile, then run both through the PIM Fit Finder. Build your demo script from the demo scenarios library so both vendors show the same five tests on your data.
Inriver and Salsify answer different first questions. Decide whether your product data problem starts at the ERP or at the retailer, then make both vendors show SC-14 on your own retailer template.

Frequently asked questions
Is Inriver or Salsify better for a manufacturer?
Neither Inriver nor Salsify is better for every manufacturer. Inriver positions its PIM for manufacturers and brands and has an SAP-certified S/4HANA Cloud connector. Salsify centres on consumer brands that syndicate content to retailers through its own network. A manufacturer that sells mainly through distributors and its own webshop should test Inriver closely, while a brand selling through large retailers should weigh Salsify's network.
Does Salsify include a GDSN data pool?
Salsify describes a GS1-certified GDSN data pool as part of its PXM Network, used to synchronise supply chain, marketing and e-commerce attributes with trading partners. Inriver does not document its own data pool on the pages reviewed on 14 October 2026. Buyers that must publish to GDSN should run scenario SC-13 with both vendors and ask Inriver which partner route it proposes.
What does the Cinven acquisition mean for Salsify customers?
Salsify agreed in July 2026 to be acquired by private equity firm Cinven, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions. No closing was confirmed in the sources checked on 14 October 2026. Buyers signing now should negotiate price caps on renewals, roadmap commitments in writing and exit assistance clauses, because ownership changes often bring pricing and packaging reviews.
Do Inriver and Salsify publish prices?
Neither vendor publishes prices. Inriver lists four plans, Foundation, Core, Professional and Enterprise, and quotes each after a consultation. Salsify shows no price list on its product pages. Ask both vendors to price the exact modules your demo scenarios used, including syndication, analytics, supplier onboarding and AI, so the quotes compare like with like.
Can Inriver and Salsify both connect to SAP?
Both vendors name SAP. Inriver's S/4HANA Cloud connector was certified by SAP on 28 May 2026, and Inriver also has an SAP Commerce Cloud adapter. Salsify lists SAP in its technology partner directory and names SAP and Oracle as out-of-the-box integrations. Test the master split per attribute with scenario SC-25 before relying on either connector.
