PIM SelectionThe independent guide to choosing a PIM

What are red flags in a PIM demo?

Red flags in a PIM demo are signs that the vendor avoids your real use cases. Typical flags are refusing your sample data, skipping scenarios, presenting roadmap features as available, hiding configuration effort, vague pricing answers and AI shown only on prepared examples. Each red flag should lower the score and trigger a written follow-up.

A red flag in a PIM demo is any sign that the vendor is steering away from your scenarios and your data. PIMvendors collects these patterns in its Red Flag Register, because they point to problems that surface later in implementation.

Common red flags:

  • The vendor asks to use its own demo data in place of your sample data.
  • Scenarios are skipped, shortened or replaced by slides.
  • Roadmap features are presented as available today.
  • The vendor cannot say what was configured for the demo and what is standard.
  • Bulk changes, imports or error handling are shown on 5 products, never on 5,000.
  • Integration with your ERP is described in words, with no data shown flowing.
  • AI features run on prepared examples, with no test on your supplier files.
  • Pricing answers stay vague on modules, users, overage and price increases.
  • The implementation partner is absent, or meets the team for the first time on demo day.

One red flag is a reason to ask for evidence in writing. Two or three on the same topic, for example integration, usually point to a real gap.

Score red flags explicitly on the demo scorecard. A vendor that runs your scenarios on your data, admits limits and shows configuration effort gives a reliable picture, even when the result looks less polished.
